In today's world, the public is not indifferent to the ecology and quality of materials. And this also applies to leather belts. How can the production of this popular modern wardrobe addition contribute to sustainability?
Leather responsibly and with respect for nature
It all starts with the tape materials. Leather is something that occurs naturally as a secondary (waste) product of meat processing. And that's why, like other responsible manufacturers of leather accessories, we don't agree to breeding animals just for the purpose of obtaining leather and fur.
Why not leatherette or eco-leather?
Leather is a unique material and manufacturers often try to imitate its properties. This is how various imitations such as synthetic leather and so-called eco leather are created. They consist of a fabric base, mostly cotton knit, with a layer of polyurethane. Compared to leatherette, eco-leather is softer, more durable, more reliable and odorless.
Although these materials are trendy, especially since they are often cheaper. On the other hand, it is something that is purpose-built and has no secondary use. The lifespan is significantly shorter and disposal tends to be more environmentally demanding.
Production without waste
In our Czech workshop, we take care to use the leather whole, with only really minimal waste. That's why we make belt loops, as well as minimalist cases and wallets, from scraps (after cutting out the belts for the belts themselves).
Can leather have natural alternatives?
In addition to artificial imitations, more natural materials are also appearing. At first glance, they may appear to be real leather. However, new materials made from natural fibers do not yet have the same quality properties as leather.
From the point of view of ecology, it is also necessary to take into account the method of their processing. As a result, it can be more burdensome for the environment. Especially if chemicals, dangerous adhesives and other substances are used during the process. And again, we take into account the lifespan of such products, which may not be as long as we would like.
Genuine leather wins
Genuine leather is a proven quality material for years, and accessories made of it are timeless. Precisely crafted belts with carefully executed stitching, such as those from REDFIR, do not go out of style easily. In addition, it goes well with many styles of clothing.
